The term \u2018laser\u2019 is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated \nEmission of Radiation. A laser is a device that converts different types\n of energy (electrical, light, chemical, or thermal) into optical \ncoherent electromagnetic radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All types of lasers are basically optical amplifiers \u2013 they \u2018excite\u2019 \nthe lasing medium (a load of atoms of a solid, liquid, or gas with \nelectrons in them) placed between two mirrors, creating the process of \nstimulated emission. The excited atoms give off photons that bounce \nbetween two mirrors causing emission of more photons. The chain reaction\n continues and the number of photons increases. A partially-reflecting \nmirror at one end of the tube lets some of them escape. The escaping \nphotons emerge as a very concentrated and powerful laser beam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are three most common types of lasers used for industrial cutting systems, each with its advantages and disadvantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Solid state lasers use solid crystalline (such as ruby or \nyttrium aluminum garnet) as lasing medium and the light of arc lamp as a\n pumping source. Comparatively low cost is the main benefit of these \nlasers. However, due to low output power and short lifetime they did not\n get general industrial application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Semiconductor lasers differ from solid state lasers as they \nare electrically pumped by laser diodes. Low cost maintenance of such \nlaser systems is their great advantage. On the downside, the repairs of \nthe main unit \u2013 a resonator \u2013 can only be performed by the manufacturer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gas lasers use compounds of noble gases (CO2, N2, He) as their\n medium and are pumped by electromagnetic discharge. These lasers offer \nmany advantages. They generate highly monochromatic powerful narrow \ndirectional beam and due to their wavelength can process both metals and\n non-metals. In addition, gas lasers are highly reliable, maintainable \nand durable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
